Members of the House of Representatives, during the 16th Day Sitting of the 3rd Quarter of the 2nd Session, have voted to add fourteen (14) additional seats to the House of Representatives.

The decision follows the submission of a detailed report from the Joint Committee on Elections and Inauguration, Judiciary, and Good Governance & Government Reform, outlining a constitutionally and politically guided framework for the reapportionment of Liberiaโ€™s constituencies ahead of the 2029 General and Presidential Elections.

According to the Joint Committeeโ€™s recommendations, the 14 new seats will be allocated as follows:

  • Montserrado County โ€“ 5 seats
  • Lofa County โ€“ 2 seats
  • Nimba County โ€“ 2 seats
  • Bong County โ€“ 2 seats
  • Grand Bassa County โ€“ 1 seat
  • Margibi County โ€“ 1 seat
  • Grand Gedeh County โ€“ 1 seat

Following the reading of the report, Plenary was immediately engaged in vigorous debate.

During the deliberations, Hon. Foday Fahnbulleh proffered a motion to endorse the report and recommended that the Speaker constitute a specialized committee to collaborate with the National Elections Commission (NEC) and the Liberia Institute of Statistics and Geo-Information Services (LISGIS) to ensure that the reapportionment process is properly guided and implemented.

The move to expand the number of seats is intended to ensure fair representation across counties in accordance with population dynamics and constitutional requirements.
