British soldier accused of rape in Kenya sent back to UK
The alleged rape happened last month close to the British Army Training Unit Kenya (Batuk) near the town of Nanyuki, 200km (125 miles) north of the capital, Nairobi.
The man was arrested and questioned following the alleged incident, which occurred after a group of soldiers visited a bar in the town.
An investigation is being carried out by UK military police from the Defence Serious Crime Unit, which looks into crimes allegedly committed by British service personnel in the UK and overseas.
The UK Ministry of Defence confirmed in a statement that a “service person” had been arrested in Kenya.
“Unacceptable and criminal behaviour has absolutely no place in our Armed Forces and any reporting of a serious crime by serving personnel is investigated independently from their chain of command,” the MoD said.
The alleged rape involving a soldier from the British base in Kenya follows previous allegations that a soldier stationed in Kenya was involved in the murder of a local woman in 2012.
The body of Agnes Wanjiru, who was 21 and a mother of one, was found in a septic tank near the Batuk base three weeks after she disappeared, allegedly after spending the evening with British soldiers.
The UK-based Sunday Times newspaper reported in 2021 that a British soldier was believed to have been responsible for her murder.
The MoD has since said it was co-operating with a Kenyan investigation into the incident.
The Batuk base was established in 1964 shortly after the East African nation gained independence from the UK.
The UK military has an agreement with Kenya under which it can deploy up to six army battalions a year for periods of training at the site.
But the British army has faced a string of allegations about the conduct of some UK personnel at the camp.

The Monrovia City Court has ordered the release of former House Speaker J. Fonati Koffa and three other lawmakersโAbu B. Kamara (District #15, Montserrado County), Dixon Seboe (District #16, Montserrado County), and Jacob Debee (District #3, Grand Gedeh County)โfrom the Monrovia Central Prison, where they spent the past two nights in pretrial detention.

Reporters gathered that their release followed the filing of a US$1.8 million property bond, which was approved by Stipendiary Magistrate Ben Barco on Monday morning. The bond clears the way for the lawmakers to be turned over to their legal team while awaiting trial.
Koffa and his co-defendants are accused of orchestrating the December 18, 2024 โarson attackโ on the Capitol Building, which destroyed key parts of the legislature, including the Joint Chambers, and caused an estimated US$8.6 million in damages.
The courtroom and its surroundings were crowded with supporters and political allies, including former President George Manneh Weah and Alexander B. Cummings, who made rare joint appearances to express solidarity with the accused.
Several former officials of the CDC-led administration were also seen inside the courtroom.

The Monrovia City Court has imposed a travel ban on former House Speaker J. Fonati Koffa and four other lawmakers in connection with the December 2024 fire that gutted the Capitol Building.
The courtโs order, issued over the weekend by Stipendiary Magistrate Ben Barco, followed a petition from state prosecutors seeking a Writ of Ne Exeat Republicaโa legal mechanism barring defendants from leaving the country while facing criminal prosecution.
Lawmakers affected include Reps. Fonati Koffa, Abu Bana Kamara, Dixon Wlawlee Seboe, Jacob C. Debee, and Priscilla A. Cooper. All five face multiple charges, including arson, criminal conspiracy, and criminal facilitation, stemming from the police investigation into the Capitol blaze.
According to judicial sources, Magistrate Barco has directed all national security agencies to arrest the lawmakers โliving or attempting to departโ through any of the countryโs exit points.
The move comes just one day after Koffa and three of the accused lawmakers were remanded to the Monrovia Central Prison pending trial, deepening the legal and political fallout from the high-profile case.
